Offering in-depth training to all levels of healthcare professionals
Sherry Yafai MD is a Cannabis and Emergency Medicine physician at Providence St. John’s Medical Center since 2009. Dr. Yafai started her medical career at UCSD Medical School graduating in 2005 and UCSD Emergency Medicine Residency in 2009. In 2017, after recreational marijuana laws had passed in California, Dr. Yafai opened her private Cannabis Clinic, the ReLeaf Institute, where she sees patients referred by physicians for cannabis education and treatment. Roughly 75% of her patients are over the age of 50 and prefer to use non-smokable Cannabis products.
She is the recent past Co-Vice President of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians, the previous Director of Research and Development at High Sobriety, a member of the UCLA Cannabis Initiative and speaker for UCSD Center for Medical Cannabis Research. In 2018 she was accepted as an Adjunct Associate Professor at John Wayne Cancer Institute (now Saint Johns Cancer Institute). Dr. Yafai works to educate physicians, clinicians, and other health care providers on the most up to date clinical data and research in the field of Cannabis.
Cannabis as a medical tool has been legal in the state of California since 1996, yet medical education has faltered. Dr. Sherry's goal is to present medical data, without bias, to provide patients, physicians and our lawyer colleagues with better education and data. With over 12 years of medical experience in the Emergency Department and 5 years in Cannabis Medicine, Dr. Sherry serves as an expert witness for legal cases. Her last case was closed in favor of her client, before going to court (2021).
Education in Medical Cannabis is lacking in the medical field. As states continue to change toward medical and adult use rules at a rapid rate, health care professionals are lagging. To work on filling this void, Dr. Yafai has worked tirelessly with the Releaf Institute to create a half-day conference on Medical Cannabis. Featuring The Medical Board of California, 2 physician speakers and a medical cannabis lawyer, the conference is a great way to improve your practice with patients using cannabis or interested in cannabis treatment. www.thereleafinstitute.com/conferences
Dr. Sherry's previously worked with High Sobriety, a sober living facility that incorporates non-smokable cannabis treatment in the maintenance of sobriety for individuals who have had multiple failed attempts at sobriety. This innovative bridge treatment out of narcotics may be another treatment plan for those who have failed traditional treatment.
